Over 12 years, a sit-and-rise score of 0–4 went with nearly four times the natural-cause mortality of a 10
What does a sit-and-rise score of 8 mean?
The finding
Against a perfect 10, the 0–4 group had hazard ratios of 3.84 (2.25–6.97) for natural-cause death and 6.05 (2.29–20.94) for cardiovascular death.

How it was studied
Prospective cohort, 1998–2023: 4,282 adults aged 46–75, 68% men, without limitations to fitness testing. Median follow-up 12.3 years; 665 deaths (15.5%), excluding COVID-19 and external causes.
The numbers
Death rates from the lowest group to the highest (0–4, 4.5–7.5, 8, 8.5–9.5, 10) were 42.1%, 20.4%, 11.1%, 7.0% and 3.7%. The 0–4 group was the lowest 10% of participants. A score of 8 still had three times the death rate of a 10.
What it does not show
Observational, single clinic, mostly men. The wide interval on the cardiovascular figure reflects few events in the top group.
What Longstanding does with it
The "get up off the floor with one hand" goal targets a score of 8 at 85. This study is a reminder that 8 is a floor for independence, not a ceiling.
