Protocol

  1. Zone 2 is steady effort you can keep up while talking in full sentences.

  2. With Apple Health or Health Connect linked, workouts whose average heart rate sits in your zone 2 band are counted automatically.

  3. Without it, enter your average weekly minutes over the last four weeks.

Safety. Easy effort. Nothing to watch out for beyond your usual training.

How it is scored

Not a percentile. Shown as a share of 150 minutes a week, the lower end of the WHO guideline (150–300). The heart-rate band is moderate intensity; true zone 2 varies between people.

Guideline

Not a percentile. Shown as a share of a published activity guideline.

Reference table

WHO guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour (2020): 150–300 minutes of moderate activity per week

Adults

Not a percentile. The band (65–75% of Tanaka maximum heart rate) is moderate intensity; true zone 2 varies from person to person.

Known gaps

Where the app’s table or protocol differs from its best source, from our own check of the research.

  • A workout counts when its average heart rate sits in 65–75% of predicted maximum (Tanaka). For many people that band is not their physiological zone 2; read it as moderate-intensity minutes.
  • A whole workout counts or not by its average, so intervals that average into the band count, and a steady ride one beat above it counts as zero.
  • The 150-minute target is WHO’s moderate-to-vigorous minimum. Vigorous minutes, which count double in the guideline, are not added.
